Traditional Bavarian Lederhosen

Lederhosen are the leather trousers of the Alpine regions of Bavaria and Austria, and a good pair of traditional German lederhosen is one of the few garments that looks better after ten years than on the first day. Every pair in this collection is genuine leather: brushed cow suede, goatskin or deerskin.

Each pair is finished the traditional way: a drop-front flap, embroidered side panels, horn-style buttons and suspenders joined by an embroidered chest bar.

Use the filters to narrow by size, color, leather and length, or start with a style below. Short leather trousers are the classic Oktoberfest look, knee-length bundhosen add warmth and a more formal line, and our outfit sets bundle the trousers with a matching shirt and socks so the whole look arrives in one box. Sizes run from US 0 for women to a US 60 waist in big and tall, with baby, toddler and kids sizes for the rest of the family.

What makes lederhosen the real thing

Cheap party costumes copy the silhouette of lederhosen in printed polyester. The traditional garment is defined by its material and its construction, and those are the details worth checking before you buy:

  • Genuine leather. Real lederhosen are cut from hide, usually with the suede side out. Leather shapes itself to the wearer, breathes better than synthetics and can be brushed back to life after a long night.
  • The front flap (Hosenlatz). Instead of a fly, traditional trousers open with a wide flap held by buttons at the waistband. It is the detail that separates a true Bavarian cut from a pair of leather shorts.
  • Suspenders and chest bar. H-shaped suspenders (Hosenträger) carry the weight of the leather and keep the waist where it belongs. The bar across the chest is often embroidered to match the legs.
  • Embroidery. Oak leaves, edelweiss, stags and scrollwork are stitched into the side seams and flap. The motif and thread color give each pair its character.
  • Buttons and hardware. Horn or horn-look buttons, laced or buckled hems and side pockets complete the look.

Every style we sell has these features. Each product page lists the leather, the inseam and the details of that particular pair, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Choose your style

Three questions settle most decisions: how long you want the legs, whether you want a single garment or a complete look, and who the outfit is for.

Style Length Best for Price range
Lederhosen shorts 2.5 to 5 inch inseam, above the knee Oktoberfest, summer festivals, dancing $109 to $259
Bundhosen Closes just below the knee Cool evenings, weddings, club events $139 to $279
Lederhosen outfit sets Short or knee-length A complete look in one order $199 to $379

Short or knee-length?

Short styles are lighter, cooler and easier to move in, which is why they dominate beer tents and dance floors. Knee-length styles keep more of your leg covered, sit well with knee socks and read slightly more formal. If you will mostly wear them outdoors in late September, the longer cut is the practical choice. If you plan on a crowded, warm tent, go short.

A single pair or a full outfit?

If you already own a Trachten shirt and socks, buy the trousers alone and spend more on the leather. If you are starting from nothing, a set is the quickest route to a coordinated look: the shirt and socks are chosen to suit the leather and embroidery, and you only pick two sizes.

Leather grades compared

The leather decides how a pair feels on day one, how it ages and what it costs. We name the leather on every product so you can compare like with like.

Leather Feel Ageing Price range
Cow suede Sturdy with a brushed nap; firm at first Softens noticeably after a few wears $109 to $189
Goatskin Lighter, with a finer grain Stays flexible and resists scuffs well $159 to $219
Deerskin The softest and most supple from the start Develops a rich, lived-in patina $189 to $279

Cow suede is the sensible choice for a first pair or for occasional wear. Goatskin suits anyone who wants something lighter that they will wear often. Deerskin is the traditional premium option, and the one to choose if you want a pair to keep for decades. Our guide to deerskin and goatskin lederhosen explains the differences in more depth.

Lederhosen for men

Most of the range is cut for men, in waist sizes from US 28 to 44. Men's styles come as classic shorts with a 4 inch inseam, knee-length bundhosen and complete outfits, in every leather grade and more than a dozen colors. The cut sits at the natural waist with room in the seat for sitting on a bench all afternoon, and the suspenders adjust so the trousers hang at the right height.

Larger frames are not an afterthought. Our big and tall lederhosen run from a US 44 to a US 60 waist on a separate pattern with a longer rise, a roomier thigh and extended suspenders, so the proportions and embroidery still look right.

Women's and kids' styles

Our women's lederhosen are cut on women's patterns rather than scaled-down men's ones: higher at the waist, shaped through the hip and available in US 0 to 18, with curve styles from US 16 to 28. Along with classic shorts there are bib styles, bermuda and knee lengths and leather skirts.

For the youngest guests, our kids and baby lederhosen come in soft suede in baby (6 to 24 months), toddler (2T to 5T) and kids (6 to 14 years) sizes, with snaps and adjustable straps that make dressing easier.

How lederhosen should fit

Genuine leather relaxes and molds to your body as you wear it, so a new pair should feel close rather than loose:

  • Waist: snug enough to stay in place without the suspenders, but you should be able to sit and breathe comfortably.
  • Thigh: close to the leg without pulling. Short styles should not ride up far when you sit.
  • Rise: the front flap should sit flat, and the suspenders take care of the final height.

Measure your waist where you wear your trousers and compare it with the chart on the product page, because every style has its own chart. If you fall between two sizes, choose the larger one: the leather eases a little, but it will not stretch a full size. Our size guide shows how to measure step by step. If standard sizes do not suit you, ask about made to measure.

Colors and embroidery

Brown in all its shades, from light tan to espresso, is the classic color and the easiest to style. Black looks sharp and modern, especially with white or silver embroidery. Green and olive leather, and grey shades from stone to charcoal, have long regional traditions in the Alps and stand out in a crowd. Browse lederhosen by color to see every shade side by side.

Embroidery color matters as much as the leather. Cream and white thread reads classic and bright. Green ties in with a green hat or socks, and tonal stitching (thread close to the leather color) gives a quieter, more grown-up look. Pick a shirt that picks up one of the thread colors and the outfit will look planned rather than assembled.

What to wear with lederhosen

A traditional outfit is built in layers:

  1. Shirt: a checked shirt in red, blue or green is the festival classic. A white linen or linen-look shirt is more formal and works with every leather color.
  2. Socks: knee socks in cream, grey or natural wool, or loferl (two-piece calf warmers worn with short ankle socks) for the most traditional look.
  3. Shoes: haferl shoes, the traditional side-laced leather shoe, are ideal. Plain brown leather shoes or boots are a good substitute.
  4. Extras: a felt hat and, on cooler days, a vest (Weste). Skip the belt: the suspenders do that job.

Our lederhosen outfit sets already pair the trousers with a matching shirt and socks, and the Complete and Heritage tiers add a felt hat.

Caring for your lederhosen

Leather needs very little maintenance, and less is usually better. Brush the nap with a soft suede brush after wearing, let the trousers air dry away from direct heat, and blot spills straight away with a dry cloth. Never put leather in a washing machine. Store them on a hanger in a breathable garment bag rather than in plastic. Our leather care guide covers stains, drying and conditioning in detail.

Lederhosen: frequently asked questions

Is it lederhose or lederhosen?

Both are correct. In German, Lederhose is the singular (one pair of leather trousers) and Lederhosen is the plural. In American English, lederhosen is used for a single pair as well, the same way we say a pair of pants.

What are lederhosen made of?

Genuine lederhosen are made of leather. Ours come in three grades: brushed cow suede, goatskin and deerskin. Cow suede is sturdy and good value, goatskin is lighter and more flexible, and deerskin is the softest and most traditional. Each product page names the leather used.

How should lederhosen fit?

A new pair should feel close at the waist and thigh, because genuine leather relaxes and molds to you with wear. You should still be able to sit comfortably. Use the size chart on the product page, and if you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.

Are lederhosen only worn at Oktoberfest?

No. In Bavaria and Austria, lederhosen are worn at weddings, village festivals, folk music events, church holidays and on hiking trips. In the USA they are popular for Oktoberfest celebrations, German club events, themed weddings and family photos.

What is the difference between short lederhosen and bundhosen?

Short lederhosen end above the knee and are the classic warm-weather style. Bundhosen are knee-length and close just below the knee with laces or a buckle. They are warmer, more formal and usually worn with knee socks.

How long does shipping take and can I exchange a size?

In-stock orders are dispatched within 1 to 2 business days and usually arrive within 3 to 6 business days in the USA. Shipping is free on orders over $150. Unworn items with tags can be exchanged for another size within 30 days of delivery.
