Dirndl: frequently asked questions

What is a dirndl?

A dirndl is the traditional dress of Bavaria and Austria, made of a fitted bodice, a full skirt, a short blouse worn underneath and an apron tied at the waist.

Which side should I tie my dirndl apron bow?

Tradition says a bow on the left means single, on the right means married or taken, in the front center means young girl or undecided, and at the back means widowed or a waitress.

What length dirndl should I choose?

Midi dirndls of about 60 to 70 cm suit almost everyone and every occasion. Mini dirndls are playful and festival-friendly, and long dirndls of 85 cm or more are best for weddings and formal events.

Do dirndls come with a blouse?

Many of our dirndl dresses are sold as sets with a matching blouse and apron. Check the product details, or pick a separate dirndl blouse to choose your own neckline.
